Health & Wellness News From Byron J. Richards
DHA Protects Against Parkinson’sTuesday, November 27, 2007 - Byron J. Richards, CCNA rather amazing mouse study has just shown that DHA, an important omega-3 essential fatty acid that is known to support healthy brain function, completely protected the brains of mice exposed to a known toxin that routinely produces Parkinson’s disease. The researchers found that the DHA would replace omega 6 oils in the brain cells of the mice that had protection. If the mice did not have protection then the brain cells with too many omega 6 fatty acids were susceptible to damage that resulted in Parkinson’s. Please note, a diet rich in French fries, potato chips, corn chips, and other vegetable oils is therefore Parkinson’s promoting. One rich in omega 3 oils, especially DHA, is Parkinson’s protective. The toxin used in this study, MPTP, has been used for over 20 years to rapidly produce Parkinson’s in animals so the disease can be studied. Even though this is a mouse study, its implications are profound. This study correlates well with many other findings on DHA, both animal and human. A higher amount of DHA in brain cells, compared to omega 6 oils in brain cells, is clearly a key to intelligence as well as prevention of cognitive decline in general. DHA is also vital for proper body weight, bone health, and heart health. The best form of DHA is known as molecularly distilled DHA. Molecular distillation insures the product is free of mercury and other contaminants. The best DHA products also have five times as much DHA than EPA. The higher level of DHA is exactly what the brain needs for food. Too much EPA can thin the blood too much or even compete with DHA for entry into the brain.
