DHA Found to Protect against Alzheimer’s

We have known for many years that the essential fatty acid DHA is one of the best brain support nutrients for young and old.  Researchers at UCLA’s Alzheimer Disease Research Center are identifying exactly how DHA acts to protects against Alzheimer’s disease.

It is known that Alzheimer’s patients have a very low level of a brain protein that has been named LR11.  LR11 is needed to stop the formation of plaque in the brain that is linked to the disease.

Lead researcher Greg Cole stated “We found that even low doses of DHA increased the levels of LR11 in rat neurons, while dietary DHA increased LR11 in brains of rats or older mice that had been genetically altered to develop Alzheimer’s disease.”  Cole’s research team also demonstrated that DHA boosted the formation of LR11 in human neuronal cells.

DHA (not EPA) is the important oil in fish that gives the protective effect.  Molecularly distilled DHA is the superior supplement option as all traces of mercury or other contaminants have been removed and the not important EPA has been lowered so that higher amounts of DHA can gain direct access to the brain.  Regular fish oil has twice the EPA compared to DHA – and the EPA competes with DHA for entry into the brain as well as thinning the blood too much.  Specially modified fish oil has five times the amount of brain-boosting DHA compared with EPA, a significant advantage over eating fatty fish or lower quality fish oil supplements.
