Carnosine Inhibits Excess Amyloid Beta Formation

Researchers have found that the antioxidant and metal-chelating nutrient known as carnosine1 can drastically reduce the formation of amyloid beta protein that is associated with the brain tangles of Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers tested carnosine in mice that are bred to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Not only did carnosine stop the formation of excess amyloid beta, it also rescued the energy production systems of brain cells so they could keep making energy. This is another very important angle on brain health, as ATP (cellular energy) is also used by the glial cells of the brain as a primary communication molecule.

Carnosine will be synergistic with other nutrients that help reduce amyloid beta or reduce Alzheimer’s risk, since there are many possible strategies with nutrition to help work on multiple pathways that contribute to better brain health while reducing amyloid beta formation.
