New gene technology has enabled a first-of-its-kind study whereby the effects of breast milk1 could be compared to the effects of formula in terms of which genes are responding in an infant’s intestinal tract.  The verdict is in: breast milk is highly superior.

The makers of infant formula try to ensure adequate calories and nutrients, however they cannot begin to approximate the biologically active compounds in breast milk and the ability of these compounds to produce health.  Many genes relating to intestinal tract and immune system development were activated by breast milk and were not activated by formula.

This is actually a significant health issue, as the proper development of the intestinal tract and immune system are two of the most important health issues for an infant and have a major impact on health for the rest of one’s life.  Furthermore, the genes most impacted were those involving the use of oxygen – a major factor in defending against opportunistic digestive infections.

If for some reason a mother is not able to nurse or express breast milk then bovine colostrum could be added to formula after it is heated.  This provides many of the similar bio-active compounds to human milk and has been proven to help human immunity and human digestive health.
