Lactoferrin is one of the most potent immune defense compounds that your body naturally produces. It is hopefully in your saliva, blood, tears, and mucous secretions – and if there in adequate amounts has a powerful protective effect against all types of infections. It is truly broad spectrum.

I have previously reviewed many lactoferrin studies, especially those documenting its powerful anti-candida and anti-bacterial properties.

Latoferrin in higher doses is provided to breast-fed children via mother’s milk. It is there for many reasons, two of which are to assist in the development of the immune system and digestive system. It does this through a variety of mechanisms of regulation, not just germicidal activity. This is a key strategy to provide the newborn child with a survival advantage. Lactoferrin is an evolutionarily preserved nutrient that is vital to human health.

Bovine lactoferrin is an excellent source of supplemental lactoferrin that can boost up your supply of this nutrient. Lactoferrin naturally likes to repair the digestive tract while defending it. While this is a very high priority for an infant, it is also a very high priority for any person who struggles with their digestive health. It is also a good idea at times of increased immune need, even for viral infections.

I reported last year that researchers have discovered that lactoferrin has broad spectrum anti-flu properties, meaning it can help against virtually any type of flu.

A new human study shows that 600 mg per day of bovine lactoferrin can significantly reduce the common cold and its symptoms – offering a preventive strategy for the general population. Another study shows that lactoferrin directly inhibits norovirus, a common cause of stomach disturbances, diarrhea, and vomiting.

It is clear that lactoferrin can help keep your immune system working better, especially the immune function within your digestive tract. Whenever immune chores are more efficient in your digestive tract you are more resistant to developing a wide variety of digestive issues, such as heartburn, indigestion, and irritable bowel. Virtually any digestive issue has as part of its problem a lack of efficiency of immune defense and immune-orchestrated repair.

Bovine lactoferrin is available as a purified supplement as well as naturally occurring in whey protein – especially specially filtered whey protein that concentrates a variety of biologically active immune compounds.
