Blueberries continue to impress as the top super fruit in the world. I have explained in detail in my article, Berries for Brain Protection, they are able to preserve and rejuvenate brain cells, based primarily on research done by the United States Department of Agriculture. Other recent studies show that blueberries improve memory, help build bones, help lower cholesterol, and assist in weight management efforts. The latest study, which was done by Chinese researchers, shows that blueberries help protect the retinas of your eyes to help preserve your eyesight. It is well known that exposure to excess light (UV radiation) over the course of your life can damage your eyesight. The researchers created a cellular model to study the cells that line your retina (retinal pigment epithelial cells). They found, as expected, that repetitive exposure of these cells lead to early death, multiple types of damage, and an inability to replicate at a proper rate and in a healthy manner. Treating the cells with blueberry extract prevented all these adverse changes, the types of changes that typical occur in aging. Share:
