Recent research continues to prove what has been known for many years, that DHA is a vital nutrient in the development of proper eyesight, cognitive function, and learning.  It is especially important for a mother to consume DHA during pregnancy and while nursing.  If a mother isn’t nursing then a DHA-fortified formula is mandatory.  Molecularly distilled DHA is the preferred source as there is no mercury which may be present in fish that are the primary source of dietary DHA.

The brain is one of the fattiest organs in the body and will build its structure out of whatever types of fat are in the diet.  Imagine the ability of a brain made of French fries, potato chips, corn chips, and other junk food.

DHA should be consumed as part of the fat content of the diet by any student or any person desiring optimal brain function.  300 mg – 600 mg of DHA per day is a great amount for general brain health.  DHA content of fish oil ranges from a high of 50% of the oil down to 10%.  The suggestion for 300 mg – 600 mg per day is specifically the DHA amount, not the fish oil amount which may need to be 600 mg to 6000 mg depending on the product.

In general, oils that are molecularly distilled, high in DHA, and lower in EPA are the best ones to use as dietary supplements.
