Researchers at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention1 followed 15,318 adults over a 14-year period and discovered that as the blood levels of alpha-carotene went up the risk of dying from any cause, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, decreased by up to 39%.

It has been established for decades that the lifespan of any mammalian species is related to the level of carotenes in the blood.  When carotenes are in the blood then they slowly accumulate in body tissues – offering a high level of protection as part of the overall antioxidant network.  On the other hand, if carotenes are not in the blood then they are gradually depleted from body tissue stores leading to compromised antioxidant function.

This study is clear proof of the value of alpha carotene to predict longevity.  Easy to absorb natural alpha carotene is available in dietary supplements and is also obtained in smaller amounts from fresh fruit and vegetables.
