Acidophilus Combats Oral Pathogens

Periodontal and cavity problems are associated with imbalanced bacteria in the mouth. A new study shows that various strains of acidophilus (friendly flora) can inhibit the growth of such problematic bacteria. Just as your digestive tract has a balance of power between friendly and potentially unfriendly organisms, so does your mouth. And while we normally think of taking acidophilus supplements to support healthy digestion, this study indicates another use for them. Those with problematic oral bone loss or cavity issues in their mouth may want to gargle with an acidophilus capsule in a small amount of water and then swallow. An ideal time would be before bed and after brushing your teeth. The goal is to have the friendly flora stay in your mouth for a while. Some of the most effective strains for this purpose were Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus casei. These strains are readily available in existing acidophilus products. Share:
