Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) has long been recognized as a top brain support nutrient, helping mood, memory, and cognitive function. A new study builds on this nutrient’s earlier Alzheimer’s research, documenting a precise mechanism to help prevent the formation of brain tangles that are the hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Tau proteins stabilize a primary structural component of nerve cells called microtubules. In conditions of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, tau proteins misbehave, essentially becoming hyperactive. Their chaotic behavior is a driving force behind the formation of the abnormal plaque-laden brain tangles that define Alzheimer’s disease. A new study shows1 that feeding rats ALC for two weeks corrected recently induced memory problems, boosted memory-promoting gene signals, while stopping the excessive behavior of tau proteins. In this new world of scientific exploration, the power of nutrition to support human health is being documented at the gene and molecular level. Share:
