When we think of blood pressure problems, we normally think of the problem as strictly a problem in the regulation of the circulatory system. In reality, many potential stressors that burden your circulatory system may result in high blood pressure. A new study clearly shows that a lack of deep sleep (slow wave sleep – stage 3 or 4 sleep) is a significant risk factor associated with high blood pressure.

Sleep can be disrupted for many reasons. However, whatever the reason, if it is disrupted to the point that you don’t sleep deeply enough then one consequence of that is stress to your circulatory system that drives up blood pressure. The precise mechanism behind this finding has not yet been discovered, yet the relationship is now a proven fact.

If your blood pressure is trending up one thing to do is work on getting a better night’s sleep. Basics include relaxing nutrients at bed such as magnesium, glycine, melatonin, and many other options. It is important that you find some combination of support that helps you get to sleep, sleep deeply, and wake up feeling more refreshed. Many different anti-inflammatory nutrients can be tried before bed to see if you sleep better. Top choices include blueberries, lipoic acid, grape seed extract, resveratrol Natural phenol or type of antioxidant found in red grapes, red wine. Research has shown beneficial effects as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents along with supporting healthy blood sugar and cardiovasculature function., quercetin, noni, l-theanine, etc. Some may help and some may not—everyone is a bit different when it comes to sleep.
