A new study shows that pregnant women taking 4,000 I.U. of vitamin D per day1 were able to maintain optimal levels of this vital gene-regulating nutrient throughout their pregnancy. The researchers found this level of vitamin D intake to be completely safe and effective.

Vitamin D is a gene-regulating supernutrient.  Its impact on the development of the fetus is profound. We now understand that the programming and setting of genes while in the womb and the first few years of life has dramatic implications for the future health, well-being, and intelligence of the child.  Optimizing vitamin D intake during pregnancy and nursing can go a long way towards preventing a bad dealing of the genetic deck.

The researchers also showed that 2000 I.U. per day produced pretty good results, but not as good as 4,000 I.U.  And they showed that 400 I.U. was simply not good enough.
