Nursing Homes Poisoning Our Elderly

Tuesday, May 27, 2008  -  Byron Richards, CCN

A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine shows that even a single dose of antipsychotic medication1 doubles the risk of a serious adverse event leading to hospitalization and/or death.  These drugs are widely used as behavior management in nursing homes, have no FDA approval for this use, and are clearly very unsafe.

The inhumane treatment of older Americans must stop.  Entering a nursing home is now like entering a psych ward.  Doctors hand out powerful antipsychotic medications in an effort to suppress symptoms of agitation or restless legs, often associated with dementia or the simple life-transforming event of being admitted to a nursing home.  These extremely expensive medications are being paid for by Medicare – so Big Pharma has identified the elderly as a lucrative target market (they are also attacking the brains of our children in a similar manner).

This use of these dangerous drugs is all done off label as a result of a massive illegal promotion by Big Pharma.  Where is the FDA when they are needed?  Where is Congress?  Big Pharma has reached a new low – poisoning those who have little ability to defend themselves.
