A new study shows that pediatricians in the United States write more than 10 million unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions every year for children, creating an untold amount of health damage that can last many years, even a lifetime. The negligence of Conrad Murray pales in comparison to this massive ineptitude of an entire profession.
This shocking data comes from the United States National Ambulatory and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care surveys from 2006 to 2008, evaluating 65,000 outpatient visits by children under 18. 21% of the time children were given antibiotics and half that time they were the most powerful broad spectrum antibiotics. Almost one-quarter of all antibiotic prescriptions were given to children with respiratory conditions that probably or definitely do not call for antibiotics, such as bronchitis, the flu, asthma and allergies. That translates to 10 million cases of medical poisoning.
“We think of antibiotics as being wholly beneficial, but they are not very specific, they hit everything in your body. By making our microbes that are supposed to be with us disappear, we can be causing other health problems we don’t know about,” said Betsy Foxman, an epidemiologist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the research.
And that is an under statement. Even one dose of antibiotics can alter the digestive balance of power to a condition of poor health. This is a prime cause of asthma, allergies, obesity, multiple digestive tract problems, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and even heart disease. This is a massive public health problem. This is no laughing matter. Is the FDA anywhere to be seen? Large sections of Western medicine have become a liability to the wellbeing of Americans and are drastically driving up health care costs - creating more business for themselves through miserable incompetence. The whole profession should be put on trial.
