CT Scans: A Source of Medically Induced CancerThursday, November 29, 2007 - Byron J. Richards, CCNDoes it upset anybody to know that 1000 cases of cancer per year are needlessly caused in children by the very doctors who the children are seeing for help? An additional 4000 cases of cancer are caused in children each year under the pretense that taking a picture of the child’s internal body is medically necessary. The frequency of cancer in the adult population from CT scans is 10-20 times the number for children (10,000-20,000 needless cases of cancer plus an additional 40,000-80,000 “justified” cases of cancer). CT scans use X-rays to produce a three dimensional image of the inner body or a specific region being examined – packing an X-ray dose 50-250 times a standard X-ray. It takes 20-50 years following the X-ray for cancer to emerge and the full extent of the damage to be known. The effect on children is particularly detrimental as it occurs during growth of their body – the risk for developing cancer is 1 in 1000. For adults the risk ranges from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 7000, depending on what region of the body is being evaluated (highest risk for chest, abdomen, and pelvis). A new report shows that CT scans are being used excessively, to the tune of 20 million unneeded scans per year, including 1 million on children. Yes, hospitals and emergency rooms have investment in this expensive equipment so they use it as often as they can to generate revenue. Where do we draw the line between profit-driven greed and involuntary manslaughter? Doctors have been given a free ride to medically injure under the pretense of a standard of care that is more profit-driven than safe. Who is responsible? Think twice before having a CT scan or allowing your child to have one simply because they go to an emergency room with a stomach ache. If I needed to have a CT scan I would cover my thyroid and reproductive areas with iodine before going in, super-saturating the areas for protection. Then I would take at least 600 mg a day of R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (the best antioxidant for radiation). It would greatly pain the medical profession to take simple precautions to prevent future cancer from radiation-based picture taking. Their profession would much rather cause cancer in a certain number of individuals than offer them safe and effective protection in the form of dietary supplements.
